There are occasions in the life of the cinema when a modest production, emerging without the apparatus of large studios or lavish publicity, finds itself the subject of sudden and widespread attention. Such appears to be the case with Spoiling You, the forthcoming directorial debut of Miss Megan Tremethick, whose recently released teaser trailer has been viewed more than one million times within forty-eight hours of publication.

The preview was introduced in association with the American horror journal Bloody Disgusting, which presented the footage as an exclusive. From there it circulated rapidly across social platforms, with a single post on X accounting for some 950,000 viewings. These figures, a distinctly contemporary measure of interest, nevertheless suggest an appetite extending beyond the customary confines of independent British horror.

The film concerns an ASMR content creator, Miss Mutter, who invites her competition-winning admirer to spend a day in her company for a private recording session. The admirer, Drew, is portrayed by Mr Stephen Kerr, whose recent appearances in The Reign of Queen Ginnarra and In the Grip of Terror have placed him within a growing circle of young genre performers. Mr Kerr’s role appears to form the emotional fulcrum of the narrative. Mr Laurence R. Harvey, known internationally for his performance in The Human Centipede 2, is also among the cast, and Mr Harvey’s participation lends the production a certain established notoriety within the horror field.

What distinguishes Spoiling You is less its premise than its attempt to draw together two currents of influence not often combined. On the one hand, it gestures toward the restrained psychological unease characteristic of more recent Japanese horror cinema, including Kairo by Mr Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Audition by Mr Takashi Miike. On the other, it situates itself within the comparatively recent cultural fashion of ASMR, that curious practice in which whispered confidences and intimate sounds are transmitted to unseen listeners.

Horror, it may be observed, has always concerned itself with proximity: the voice behind the door, the breath in the darkness, the uninvited nearness of another presence. In this respect, the adoption of ASMR as a narrative device is less an innovation than an adaptation of familiar anxieties to modern habits of spectatorship. Whether the completed film sustains this thematic promise remains to be seen, but the early response suggests that audiences recognise something timely in its conception.

Prior to production, the project achieved a notable result on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, securing what was, at the time, the highest sum raised by a female horror filmmaker. Such ventures increasingly form part of the independent cinema landscape, reflecting both the challenges and the resourcefulness of filmmakers working beyond traditional finance structures.

Miss Tremethick, previously the recipient of the British Horror Studio Award for Best Actress of the Year, is to appear in three feature productions scheduled for release this year. In addition to Spoiling You, she features in Black Chariot, directed by Mr Lawrie Brewster, and Mr Whispers, co-directed by Mr Dorian Todd, Mr Oliver Revie, and Mr Seamus MacNeil. Mr Brewster’s contribution to the current revival of Gothic-inflected British horror has been noted in recent years, and these forthcoming releases suggest a period of sustained activity for the company concerned.

Spoiling You will receive its premiere at the Romford Horror Festival, to be held from 19 to 22 February 2026, where it will screen alongside the aforementioned productions. Miss Tremethick is expected to attend.

In an age when attention is frequently fleeting and enthusiasm readily amplified, the swift circulation of this modest teaser invites a degree of cautious curiosity. If nothing else, it demonstrates that even within the crowded avenues of contemporary exhibition, an independent British horror picture may still arrest the imagination through suggestion rather than spectacle alone.
